Sigiriya

Rising dramatically above the lush green plains of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya is one of the island’s most extraordinary historical destinations. Sigiriya was developed in the 5th century during the reign of King Kashyapa, who transformed the massive rock and its surroundings into an impressive royal complex. Today, Sigiriya is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of ancient Sri Lankan urban planning, architecture and engineering.

Your journey begins at the beautifully designed Water Gardens at the base of the rock. Ancient pools, fountains, waterways and landscaped gardens reveal the remarkable knowledge of the engineers who created Sigiriya more than 1,500 years ago. Walking through these peaceful gardens while the enormous rock rises ahead is an unforgettable introduction to the site.

As you climb higher, you will discover the famous Sigiriya Frescoes, beautiful ancient paintings preserved on the rock face. The nearby Mirror Wall provides another fascinating connection to the past, with historic poems and inscriptions left by visitors many centuries ago.

One of the most impressive points of the climb is the Lion’s Paw Terrace. Two enormous stone paws remain from what was once a monumental lion-shaped gateway leading towards the royal palace above. From here, the final ascent takes you towards the summit of Sigiriya.

At the top, explore the remains of the ancient royal palace, terraces, pools and other archaeological structures while enjoying magnificent panoramic views across forests, lakes, villages and distant mountains. Standing on the summit is one of the most memorable experiences a traveller can have in Sri Lanka.
